During the time of the messenger, prayer was established, surah al fatiha was revealed. The times of prayer were learned from jibreel after isra and miraj. They used to pray before, but optional. Not mandatory until after isra and miraaj.

When rasulullah prayed, he prayed to two qiblahs. He faced kabaa and jerusalem at the same time. Message to the jews, this is a message that this is from the same source

2nd year of hijra, changed to kabaah.

Mecca was the center of religious practices in Mecca. All the arabs used to come to MEcca for pilgramage. When you go to Arafat, and you go to Mina during Hajj, you have different areas for different nationalities. Asia, United States, Arab countries. During Rasulullah’s time, they had the same thing. Rasulullah approached the people, asked them to protect him and allow him to spread the message.

Wanted them to provide for him a base, to ALLOW him to spread the message. He spoke to the different tribes, wanted to know if he could make dawaah peacefully. Went to the different tribes, and the only reasons they stated were, “Your own tribe does not protect you. If your own tribe does not protect you, wy should we protect you?” Your tribe was a source of strength for you. The supported you in ease and hardship, whether you were right or wrong.

Saying: “Help your brother, whether he is the oppressor or the oppressed.” In other words, doesnt matter if he is wong/right, it’s allegiance. Because it was a warring society, there was that type of mentality.

Rasulullah would say the same thing after Islam became widespread. “Help your companion, oppressor or oppressed. Companions were confused. Why should we help an oppressor? Rasulullah, “If he is the oppressor, stop him from oppressing. If he is oppressed, free him from oppression.”

Rasulullah would take the non-Islamic concepts and turn it back to the Islamic meaning.

So the outside tribes refused to protect him, because his own tribe was not helping him and they did not want to make an enemy out of the Quraysh.

In the 11th year of the hijra, the prophet (saw) met a group from the Ansar. From Medina. Not know as Ansar at the time, and Medina was Yathrib. City north of Makkah, known for it’s dates.

Majority of Medina were farmers. Three main groups: Aws – tribe. Khazrah – tribe. Jews – in medina, waiting for the Prophet to come, knew this would be his base. the final prophet would make his base in medina. learned this from their scriptures.

Aws and Khazraj were a warring faction. great enmity between the two. You could get killed if you stray into enemy territory. Sorta like the Blood and the Crips in their enmity before Islam. If something happened, it could cause a whole civil war.

In the 5th year of revelation, there was a major war in Medina. Yaum – al -Buath. Their civil war. Many of the leaders from both sides were killed.

Eventually, the Aws defeated the Khazraj. After the war, the people in Medina were very tired of warfare. Not a way to live, can’t continue.

Aisha (ra): Yaum al-Buath, Allah was preparing Medina for the acceptance of Rasulullah. Because of this battle, tey became tired of bloodshed. They wee looking for a leader. But they could not take a leader from either tribe.

Before the coming, they chose: Abdullah ibn Obayd ibn Khulud? from the khazraj, because they were the majority. But still, they were looking for someone to lead them and bring them togeter.

One of the youth in the group, “You know, this is the same prophet that the Jews were talking about. Let’s beat them to him. The first group accepted Islam. They spoke to the prophet, we have left our community, for no one has been more divided than they are (Aws and Khazraj). They really want to reconcile their differences, and found a natural leader in Rasulullah.

Very strong, eleoquent, had te lineage, everone knew him. Perfect person, because he is not from the Aws or Khazraj. In certain communities, you need to find someone between the two communities.

5 people who went back, called their families to Islam. Then, 12 Muslims came back. Rasulullah wanted to meet them. Meet the 12 people in a place called Aqabah, at night time. It was a secret meeting hidden from the Quraysh. They did not want Rasulullah to find a base.

Took the pledge of allegiance. Outside of mina. Aqabah, mountain.First pledge: very simple. Ask them to just worship Allah (swt) and not commit shirk. Do not steal, commit fornication or adultery. If they were to do so, follow this pledge, they would get Jannah. First pledge with 12 men.

This was very important, because this was like the light of the tunnel. Remember, Rasul had nowhere to go. Dwaah in Makkah had come to a standstill.

When you think about any great story, the hero is faced with great opposition. There is a point in the story, where the hero doesn’t know how they will escape. And then something happens, and it begins a chain reaction. Meeting the poeple in Medina was the light in the tunnel, the first step in the chain reaction.

Mus’ab ibn Umayr: First ambassador. In Mecca, he was one of the leaders of the youth, everyone looked up to him, and his parents were very wealthy. Had the nicest clothing, nicest shoes. If this was a high school, he was the most famous guy, the quarterback. Mus’ab ibn Umayr was that guy. They didn’t even have to look up to know that he was coming. They could smell his perfume. He was a trendsetter. Everyone wanted to be like him but not everyone could afford to dress like him.

His mother locked him up, because his parents didn’t want him to be influenced by Islam. Chained him up in his room. Eventually escaped to Habasha. After, when the Muslims became stronger, with the acceptance of Omar ibn al-Khattab and Hamza, he came back.

Stayed with Asad ibn Zurara (?) and made dawaah. Sa’ad ibn Muad ?- leader of the Aws. Bani Abdul Ashad (?) his tribe. Went to his tribe, made them all convert except for one person. Usayram.  but even him, on the day of uhud, he accepted islam, and went straight to the battlefield (3rd year). Most of Bani Abdul Ashad accepted Islam before the coming of Rasul to Medina because their leader accepted Islam. Leader has influence. Piety does not equal leadership. Best to have both, but one does not equal the other.

Abu Darr, known for piety, but was weak. Rasulullah advised him not to take the position of leadership.

Usayram was martyred on the battlefield of Uhud. Rasul: He did very little, but he got a lot.” He didn’t pray one prayer, but he received Jannah. When Allah guides someone, they might end up entering Paradise at the end of his life.

There were others who accepted Islam. Musab ibn Umayr was appointed to lead the people in prayer. Neutral imam, so the Aws and Khazraj would both pray together. If the imam was either Aws or Khazraj, the opposing group would not pray with the other’s Imam.

Almost every single house in Medina had at least one person who accpeted Islam that year. When Musaab ibn Umayr called people. When they accpeted Islam, they would call their family members. Now, you have more Muslims in Medina than you do in Mecca. Rasul hasn’t even set foot in Medina yet.

Next year, Rasul met the Muslims again in Mecca. He called a meeting of the Muslims who came for Hajj. Nighttime, so the Quraysh would not know about it.

The 11th year, first meeting with 5 people. First Aqabah pledge. Just a few things were mentioned, a few things related to the deen in terms of personal connection with Allah (Swt) No stealing, no zinnah, don’t commit shirk. But its between you and Allah.

Why didn’t Rasulullah mention everything else? BEcause the details of the Shariah had not been Established yet. The concentration was on Tawheed. So the lesson here is that you must strengthen their iman first, before you start telling them to pray or wear hijab. This is why you need to speak to people to strenghten their iman, and naturally out of their own love they will start doing the other stuff.

Among the non-Muslims, 73 men and 2 women who came to the pledge of Aqabah. met the prophet at Aqabah secretly. Muslims spoke amonst themselves. When they arrived, they saw Rasullah with his uncle, al-Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib. Why was he there? he was not Muslim. He was there to represent the tribe of Bani Hashim. After the death of Abdul-Muttalib, Abu Lahab was next in line to become the leader.

Abu Lahab is in a dilemma. It’s his duty to protect the Prophet, because he is one of Banu Hashim. He took on that responsibility. Protected him for a whole month. People went to Abu Lahab, told him to ask Rasulullah where Abdul-Muttalib. Asked, “Where is my father?” Rasul: “Abdul Muttalib is in the hellfire.” After hearing this, Abu Lahab relinquished the protection, even though it was his duty. So, because of this, it now fell on the shoulders of al-Abbas. He had to, it was part of his tribal tradtions.

The first to speak, when the delegation arrived, al-Abbas. “Oh you people of Khazraj! You all know the position the prophet holds amongst us. We have protected him from our people as much as we could. He is honored and respected among our people. But he refuses to join any party except you.” So it’s not because Banu Hashim is not accepting the responsility, but he wanted the tribes in Medina. It was a way to save face, like yeah we want to take care of him but he doesn’t want us. So if the tribes in Medina can fulfill this protection, then take it. Don’t take him in and then abandon him. By doing so now, you have to prepare yourself, because you are going to be at odds with the Quraysh. You’re going to be enemies with him. This is a big step, so you better be serious aboutit. This is what Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib was telling them.

Rasulullah didn’t say anything yet. Aws and Khazraj asked him to speak, he recited Quran. And the Rasullah told them this:

  • To listen and obey in all circumstances
  • To spend in plenty as well as in scarcity
  • to enjoin good and forbid evil
  • in Allah’s service,you will fear the censure of none
  • to defend me in case I seek your help, and protect me from anything you protect yourself, your spouses and children from

In return, they would get Jannah.

Everyone must take the responsibility of enjoining good and forbidding evil. This is an integral part of society. This is to make the society better. Not just a responsbility for the police. The law and legislation is for Allah alone.

When this occured, the Shaytan was on the mountain of Mina. He gave an announcement, that the people of Medina had agreed to Protect the prophet. So most of the people, they’re hearing this as their sleeping.

In the morning, the Quraysh, Abu Jahl, they hear about this. They hear only rumours, not confirmation, because shaytan doesn’t want this to happen.

They go to the medina camp, and say, “We have heard you have offered to protect and invited Muhammad. Is this true?”

The non-Muslims in the camp have no idea what their talking about. They tell them they’re just rumors. So Abu Jahl turns around and is satisfied that it’s only a rumor.

When the messenger of Allah (swt) heard this, the people said, “we are ready to protect you now.” but Rasul told them to hold off, because the time of fighting was not yet upon them.

So now, the Muslims have a place to go. Based on La ilaha illalah muhammadur rasulullah.

Hijab is an order from Allah in Surah Noor, part of Islam, very important to cover. But when you see a sister, you can emphasize it, but some people are not up to that level yet. They might feel like you’re nagging or bothering them. Remind them of the hereafter.

When a person does something bad, the best of those are the ones who repent their sins. After if you do remember Allah, it’s a better sign than not remembering Allah. Tactic of shaytaan, makes you forget, and then he’s done his job and he leaves. After they commit the sin, the shaytan leaves, “let me take a rest” al-khanaas, someone whispers and goes away.

When you make your tawaaf, you must go around the unfinished part of the kabaah.

Husband and wife praying together, not technically considered jamaah but still very beneficial and helpful to one another.

Rasulullah was not one of the last to leave. It shows his care to make sure that everybody was safe to leave Mecca before he would go. 13 years spent in Mecca, 10 years spent in Medina

When Rasul gave them permission

Omar ibn al-Khattab: “Whoever wants their mother to lose their child, meet me at such and such valley.” He was the only one who announced his leaving. Everyone else left secretly.

The Meccans tried to prevent the Muslims from leaving. Majority had to leave without belongings. If they did, they would be stopped.

Abu Salamah: one of the first to leave. The first to leave was Mus’ab ibn Umayr, ambassador.

Abdullah ibn Abi (Makhtom?) blind man, also one of the first to leave.

Abu Salamah, and his family started to leave. His wife and child were prevented from going. In the struggle, his shoulder was dislocated. Abu salamah’s family said, “If you’re not going to let her go, this child is from our family.” Umm Salamah was seperated from her husband and her child. Umm Salamah was a very emotional person. They came back from Habasha, but they were unable to go.

Every single afternoon, she would go out to an area facing Medina, and she would cry. Did this for a whole year. At that time, there was no email. Her cousin came, and saw her in that state, went to the elders of their clan. “Why are we oppressing her like this?” convinced them to let her go. Her son was also returned to her.

On her way, she reached, the outskirts. usually where you put on your ihram. before entering. Met Abu Talha there. Saw her, and said, where are you going by yourself with just your child? “I’m going to my husband.” Abu Talha brought her all the way to Medina. One of the most kind of all people. When it was time to rest, he would go away until it was time to rest. When they reached the area of Quba, he said, Here is your husband, and he left.

In Europe before the Crusades, women were treated like property. After the Crusades, the European learned how to treat their women from the Muslims. Europeans started reading books by Muslims and the Arabs. Kind treatment and respect for women, and this is where you have the codes of chivalry, how you should treat the women, and this is where the Europeans got it from, the Muslims.

Backwards logic, but this is why the jahil arabs killed their women, because it would be more shameful to lose their daughter, or mother, or wife, and have someone boast about sleeping with their women.

When she arrived in Medina, she barely had time to spend with her husband, and her husband passed away. She said, “I’m going to cry for a whole year” to show how much I loved my husband, and I’m going to cry for a whole year to show the Quraysh how much i love my husband.

When Rasul heard this, he told her to say, “Inna lillahi…allahmu ajurni fi musibati wa ukhlifi…To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return, may Allah will replace this calamity with something better.

Her first reaction was, “Who is better than Abu Salamah?” The prophet, because he married her.

Rasulullah was married to one woman most of his whole life. After Khadija, every wife he married was after he was 50. Sauda was much older, and when she came back, her family tortured her, she had no place to stay, so out of sympathy, Rasulullah married her. Rasulullah married Aisha from the order of Allah, he saw her in a dream. Because the Ummah could know the personal and private affairs of Rasulullah. We know the internal sunnahs of making ghusl, inside the house. The majority of the knowledge of inside the house came from Aisha (ra)

When the messenger of Allah was given permission to leave, there was a companion named Suhaib. Suhaib ar-Rumi was captured and sold to the Romans, fluent in their language, but then sold back to an Arab in Mecca. very hardworking companion. came into Mecca very poor. When he was free, he started to do business, started making money, much better than previous status. When he accepted Islam, and was captured, They said, “Do you think you’re going to leave the Medina? You make money off of us, and you’re gonna take that money and leave?” Suhaib: “If money is the problem, if I gave you all my money, would you let me go?” “If you dig my doorstep, all my money is there.” They took his money and let him go.

Allah infomed the prophet of what happened. “Your transaction was profitable, Suhaib.” Why was his transaction profitable? Because he had Allah and his Messenger.

There might come a time, someone might say to you, “Either stay here and be like us, or you can leave, but you can’t take any money at all.”  Islam started strange, and it will return as something strange, so give glad tidings to the strangers.

Oh messenger of Allah, can I leave? said Abu Bakr. No, said Rasulullah. It was not time yet. When the Quraysh saw, that everyone was leaving, they had an emergency meeting at Dar ul Nadwa. All the elders came, but they prevented all of Banu Hashim from attending this meeting, because that was the clan of Rasulullah. Even Abu lahab was prevented from attending the meeting. Iblees himself attended. Pretended to be an old man from (Najb?) Allowed him to stay, maybe this old man has some wisdom. After they started the meeting, they discussed what to do with Prophet.

The messenger heard about this meeting, but didn’t know what they were planning. They said, ‘I think we should just expel Rasulullah from the Arabian peninsula.’ Didn’t want to outright assisinate because it would be like declaring war on Banu Hashim.

Ibless himself said, That isn’t gonna work. He has a sweet tongue, and he will get the Arabs to follow him, and he will come back and crush you.

Another said, “Lock him up.” Iblees: His followers will eventually free him.

Abu Jahal: Let’s gather one person from every clan in Mecca, and we will strike him all at once, one young man from every tribe.

Iblees: That is the correct decision.

They came out of this meeting, chose about 50 young men, from each family/clan/tribe. They were prepared, everybody got their weapons, and they were prepared to go and kill him.

At noon, Jibreel gave Rasul the info that they were planning to kill him. Left at noon, because it is the time of siesta. If someone comes to you at noontime, it is because of emergency. Like your uncle coming at 2 in the morning. Quietest time, and is the time when Rasul left.

Allah (swt) spoke of this meeting in Surah al-Anfaal. “And remember when those who disbelieve plotted to destroy you, they plan, and you plan, and Allah is the best of planners.”

Rasul came and knocked on Abu Bakr’s door at this time. Abu Bakr knows this is an emergency. Rasul says, ‘tell everyone in the house to leave.’ they couldn’t take any chances. Abu Bakr says, ‘we’re only family, we’re not strangers. The daughters, Asma and Aisha.” A marriage before puberty is valid on the grounds that the girl accepts after puberty. He was married to Aisha, but the marriage was not yet in the same household because she was not of age.

“As-sohbah, as sohbah” (companionship), Abu Bakr said. He was asking if it was time to go on the journey.

“As-sohbah,” Rasulullah replied.

Abu Bakr broke down and cried. He was so happy because he knew this would be the most important journey of Islam.

Aisha, “I never knew a man could cry from happiness until I saw my father cry when he was informed that he would leave on the journey.”

Different types of tears. If a girl has just been asked for her hand in marriage, her silence is her approval. If she cries, we don’t know whether she wants to get married or not. If she cries, she is either really happy, or really sad. How do you know,

If her tears are hot, it’s out of anger. If the tears are cool, they are tears of happiness.

Do not look at serving the religion as a burden, but as an honor. Abu Bakr was so happy to be serving this religion, he was crying. DOn’t look at it as a responsbility, but as an honor.

Oh messenger of Allah, I have been planning for this day for a whole month. I have even bought two very strong camels, and I have fed them and strengthened them as much as I can.

Rasul said, “I will pay for the camels.” Abu Bakr said, “No, no, it’s okay.” But Rasulullah didn’t allow that.

A daee should have an independent means of income. When it comes time to give the khutbah, the imam must have freedom to speak out. If the money lining his pockets is in danger from speaking freely, that isn’t good. Always try to be self sufficient and have an outside source of income.

These are the steps that Rasulullah planned. He ordered a couple things. Ordered Asma to bring the food for them, and they were going to hide in the cave of Thawr for three days. Abdullah ibn Orkul was not a Muslim, he was a mushrik, but Rasulullah hired him as a guide. because he was the best, even if he wasn’t Muslim. As Muslims, we shouldn’t settle for less than the best when it comes dawaah. Even when it means hiring non Muslims. If he/she can do the best job, then hire non-Muslims. Because if they can do the best job, don’t settle.

Questions: How do we know Iblees attended the meeting?

A: He is one of the Jinn, and can take different forms. Just like fire. Cannot be seen in original form. If someone says he has seen the Jinn, do not take him as trustworthy.

How do we know all this? There are many Ayahs from the Quran, and hadith that support this.

So Rasulullah went back to his house after planning with Abu Bakr. Ali ibn Abi Talib is instructed to sleep in the bed of Rasulullah with his green yemeni cloak. Now, you do not want to pretend to be someone that others are looking to kill. This shows the bravery of Ali ibn Abi Talib. Allah will protect you, do not be worried, said Rasulullah.

All the items that Rasulullah kept for people, even his enemies trusted him with their wealth. Before they would travel, they would leave their wealth with Rasul. Prophet was very kind, very trustworthy. He has all this wealth with him, why can’t he just return it himself. Because people would know he was going. He told Ali what belonged to who, and instructed him to return the property to who it belonged to.

So, now, the 50 men have surrounded the house of the prophet. The prophet leaves through the backdoor. Abu Jahal is also there, supervising. He wants to make sure nothing goes wrong. The messenger, while leaving, starts to recite teh first verses of Surah Ya-Sin. When he finished the 9th ayah, “We have put a barrier before and behind, so they do not see.” When Rasul comes out, they are blinded to him. They cannot see the Prophet. So the Rasul reaches down for some dust, and starts sprinkling it on the heads of the people, but they cannot see him.

They spend the whole night waiting for Rasul to leave. An old woman comes by and says, “What areyou people doing? Rasul left last night!” When they infiltrate the house, they find Ali in the bed.

They take him out to the Kabaah, and they beat him. But Ali doesn’t know where he was. All he knew was that he should sleep in the bed.

That night, when Rasul left, and met Abu Bakr on the way, he kept looking back. Thinks back on all the times he spent, turns back around and says to Mecca, “I know you are the most beloved place in the sight of Allah. If my people had not expelled me, I would not leave.”

If you have ever been expelled from a place, know that Rasulullah has also been expelled.

Abu Bakr was very worried, kept bringing his mount around, to the side, watching, worried. But Rasulullah was calmly reciting Quran. He has taken every precautionary measure he could take, and now he must put his trust in Allah.

He knew they would chase after him, and does not want to leave immediately. So they hid in the cave for 3 days. At night, she would pack up the food, and bring it to her father and Abu Bakr. She would take her girdle and hide the food, and became known as the girl with the two girldes because ofher service.

Now, you can’t bring your FM radio with you, but you must know what is going on. At nighttime, the son of Abu Bakr would come and give them the news of the day.

Now, all this traffic leaves footprints. And the Arabs are experts at tracking footprints. A shepherd would bring his flock, to mess up the footprints and also to provide milk.

When the Meccans heard they had escaped, they put a bounty out: “If anyone can bring back Rasulullah dead or alive, we will give you 100 camels.” A LOT of money in those days. Announced to the bedouins, so they would know.

After three days, people lose interest, at first they’re very excited. Quraysh themselves hired the best trackers. They could tell if the footprint is a woman, man, if the woman is pregnant. They can even tell if the person was thirsty or not thirsty, just from the footprints.

That tracker brings them to the mouth of the cave. There are different narrations about what happened. Some narrations state a spider built the web, and the dove built the nest. Even though the story is very popular, it is considered weak. The narration in Sahih al-Bukhari does not mention these two things, but it mentions, Abu Bakr says, “If they just look down at their feet they would see us.” But nobody looked down.

Rasulullah said, “What do you think of two people, of whom Allah is the third?” Meaning, do not worry. Allah will take care of us.

Rasulullah is not worried, because he has done all that he can, the most he can possibly do. The lesson we take is, in dawaah and life, we do the best that we can. Plan correctly, thinking about all the variables, and then put our trust in Allah.

So even though they came close, they did not see him. And he did not go north, afterward, he went west, toward teh red sea.

The leader of Banu ? lead by Suraqa. They were sitting talking, and a man came. Of course, they had heard of the boutny and the ransom. When Rasul was going toward the red sea, One of Banu Mudlij? saw him. During this whole trip, there were 4 people on the trip.

Abu Bakr/Rasulullah <–always together

So, this guy from Banu Mudlij goes to Suraqa and tells him that he saw Rasulullah. I’s like the equivalent of dollar signs going off in his eyes. But, at first he’s skeptical, or makes himself look out to be skeptical. He tossed it off, and then sat for a while. After a while, then Suraqa got up. He went up to his house, told the slavegirl to put the horse behind the sand-dune. He didn’t do it himself so as not to arouse suspicion. He took his spear and made sure not to raise it up. He went on the horse, dragging his spear. Didn’t want to take any chances.

Once clear, he started galloping until he saw the prophet and Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr: O messenger of Allah, someone is here. Rasul said, “La Tahzab, don’t worry.”

Suraqa comes close, and then all of a sudden, the two front feet of the horse sink into the sand, and he falls off his horse. Ok, once, fine. But it happens a second time. So he decides to pick lots. Each one says don’t continue. But he disregarded the lots. But he already made up his mind. Just like with people who ask fatwas from sheikhs, and each one says no, that’s haraam. The 10th one might say, “Okay, yeah you’re in this country, ok.” even though the 9 before have said, no, it’s haraam. But they’re fatwa shopping. Ask the people of knowledge, but you must also follow them, not just find out the answer and disregard it.

Suraqa has already decided to go, but he just wanted to feel better.

Suddenly, a big black cloud of dust comes and envelops his face. Suraqa realized that this is someone special and he’s going to be victorious. He realizes this is someone who is a man of God, and will be given victory.

Oh Muhammad! I come in peace. I seek your protection,” says Suraqa. His mind is changed, because from what he’s seen he realizes that this is someone he can’t mess with, and is someone from whom he should seek forgiveness, because he will be victorious. “I seek you protection, and I just want one thing, When you are victorious, promise that you will not harm me.” Rasullulah promises. But he wants it in writing. So in one narration, (the guide?) writes out the note.

This note ends up saving his life, because later when he is captured by the Muslims, Suraqa pulls out this note, and it saves his life.

Suraqa is told to lead the Quraysh off the track, the one promise Rasulullah makes him adhere to. Suraqa tells the Quraysh he isn’t in this direction.

Rasulullah asks Suraqa ibn Malik, “What do you think of the day when the bracelets of Khusraw will be put on your hands?” It was a sign of glad tidings. The lesson here, when we’re depressed, we need to think of the imminent victory. BEcause if not, we might lose motivation. Rasulullah is telling Suraqa that one day, even the Persian empire will fall. This happened in the time of Omar ibn al-Khattab. Suraqa comes to Omar ibn al-Khatab when the treasures of Khusraw are brought to Medina after the fall of Khusraw. He puts the bracelets on Suraqa, because he asked.He says, “All praise is to Allah, he raised the status of a lowly Beduoin like me, that I am wearing the bracelets of Khusraw.” He turns to walk away, and Umar ibn al-Khattab is like, Where you going man? Suraqa is like, I’m taking my bracelets. Omar: Rasulullah said you’d wear, them, he didn’t say you’d keep them! These belong to the Muslims.”

Lack of sincerity is caused by lack of Iman, but it’s always related to the dunya.

Questions:

If you miss these days, you can make it up. Do we have to make sajdah when we read the quran in english? You don’t have to, you can make one sujud, but you don’t have to make it everytime.

On his way to Medina, there were people who didn’t recognize the Messenger, but they recognized Abu Bakr by face. Rasul was well-known, but not by face. People would ask, Abu Bakr would reply, “Yaseeni sadil, he guides me the way.” So people thought this was his guide. People recognized Abu Bakr because he’s a businessman.

There was one house, everyone who passed was assured they would get something to eat because of the generosity. The prophet went, and the husband was not there. The wife said, “If there was something here, you would not have had to ask.” She told him there was a very bad drought, and a rough time upon them. Rasul saw a goat that was next to the tent. He asked her if he could milk the goat, she said the only reason it was there was because it was sick.

The prophet said Bismillah, started rubbing the udder, and it started to swell up. The companions were allowed to drink first, but out of respect for the messenger, they wanted him to drink. Rasulullah told them, “The one who is serving should be the last one to drink.”

When the husband came back home, he was curious where the bucket of milk came from. his wife told him, a very blessed man came here today. In the description of Umm Ma’bad (the wife) is probably the most well known description, and eloquent and best. She says, “I saw him, a man with glowing face, a bright face. He had this light coming from him. He did not have the defects of  a tummy. His body, his face, his head, was very proportionate. He had deep brown eyes with long drooping eyelashes. His voice was very strong. He had dark, black hair. He had broad shoulders, a long neck. When he was quiet, he looked very respectful. He spoke very eloquently without any stuttering. It was like pearls falling from his tongue. From far away he looked very handsome. Up close, he looked much more handsome the closer he got. He was neither very tall, nor very short. Taller than someone you would consider of average. So a little tall. Perfect proportionate height. He was the best of the three branches. Whenever he told someone to do something, they would be very quick at his service. When he spoke, he was never scolding. And then they would quickly do it. this is the description by Umm Ma’abad of Rasulullah (SAW)

Rasulullah didn’t take the main route, the equivalent of the interstate, he took the back routes. When he arrived at Medina, he met two theives. These two thieves were of the Aslam tribe. The prophet made da’wah to them. Called them to Islam. And they accepted Islam. Now, you are not despised anymore, you are al-Mukaramaan. Even though they were known thieves, Rasulullah didn’t give up on them. That is why people who society has given up on them, we shouldn’t give up on them.

Messenger of Allah and Abu Bakr had two brand new garments received in the outskirts of Medina, because they had been traveling for almost a month. They arrived in Quba. Rasulullah always taught etiquette along with the knowledge. It’s similar to making dough and salt. The dough is the etiquette, and the knowledge is the salt. The etiquette is the majority of the knowledge.

Story: In Cambodia, they are very respectful. Most of the teachers had those whips, right? *laughter*

So it was very easy for me to teach them Arabic, after 6 months, it was easy for me to speak to them. I had started at the beginning. I got through all the books very quickly. Everything I gave them, they memorized.

Then I came to America. These are students of the same age. I started teaching them. The time it took me to finish one book in cambodia, we only got two pages done. SubhanAllah I thought, why is it so difficult? I sat down, and realized, the difference is the manners. When they want to speak, they just speak. Half the time that you’re teaching, you’re telling them to be quiet, or keep your hands to yourself.

This is totally wrong, I thought. I stopped teaching Arabic and I started teaching manners. After those two months, alhamdulillah it went very quickly. When they learned how Rasulullah dealt with people, mA it was very quick. I teach at an Islamic school is Seattle and I only speak to them in Arabic. It took a long time, but it happened.

Many books, Etiquettes of the Narrator and the person listening. Two volumes, sometimes. That is why Imam Malik (ra) his mother, when she first sent him to learn, she said, Learn from the etiquettes and the manners of Rabia (?) She said, learn from his manners before you learn from his knowledge.

When news came of Rasulullah coming, the children would climb into the treetops to see him. A jew announced, Oh people of Medina, your grandfather is coming!” Because Rasulullah’s grandfather was originally from Medina.

At first, some people thought Abu bakr was the Rasul, so they would give him salaams.

When they heard Rasulullah was coming, they went inside and got their armour. It fulfilled their pledge of allegiance. When the prophet would come to Medina, they swore that they would protect the prophet. So they were showing they were ready.

Arrive in Monday, Thursday he was in Quba. Friday he arrived in Medina. Left in Safar from Mecca, arrived in Rabi al-Awwal in Medina

Rasul ordered Mus’ab ibn Umayr, that if you see 40 people, gather them to pray. This is why Imam Shafee says, if you have 40 people, you should start a Jumaah. In either case, it’s not a condition for Jumaah. If you have even 3 people, you can have a Jumaah in that town if that is all the people you have. Allah knows best.

When the prophet arrived, the first thing that Abdullah ibn Salam said, “When the prophet (Saw) arrived in Medina, I went to see him, and I immediately recognized through his features that he would never be a liar. The first thing he said was, “Extend peace greetings among yourself…”

When you look at this hadith, this is the basis of having a successful community. You will not believe until you love each other. When you give salaams, immediately there is a bond that is created. When you see them again, it’s like, “Hey, that’s the brother that gave salaams to me.” When we give salaams now, it’s because we want something, and this is a sign of the day of judgement. When the salaam is given not for the sake of reward, but simply for information gathering purposes.

Next time you meet someone in the masjid, give them a wholehearted salaam just for the sake of it. Make them feel good. You cannot enter paradise until you love one another.

You don’t wait until Eid to give gifts. Even if it’s something small. Giving gifts strengthens the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. If you’re expecting something, and it doesn’t fulfull your expectations, you feel sad even though you got something. Don’t wait for an occasion to get something. No matter what you get, if you aren’t expecting it, you will be happy.

Don’t wait for this occasion or that occasion, just do it. This is why the holidays are so stressful, because they have to buy something, and you feel like it’s an obligation. You don’t feel fulfilled, because it’s like, “I spent so much more money than they did!”

It’s not sunnah to give gifts during eid, it’s sunnah to give year round. We don’t make one time of the year for gifts. So you strengthen the love between yourselves first.

Is it okay to give salaams to the opposite gender? Yes, if you feel it will not cause fitna between you to.

How can we teach kids manners? Teach them the stories of the prophets, messengers, and companions, and mention the etiquettes learned in this story. If they do something wrong, teach them the right way to do it. Teach with truth, and  you will have respect. Look for stories that are truthful. Set by examples also. Don’t tell them to do this and that and you do the opposite.

Story: A director of mine was non-Muslim, but he was so dedicated to his craft, he wanted the best. He told me to stop because I looked up. He said, “Shaykh, stop singing, start over from where you were.” i wasn’t singing, I was reciting Quran. But he was so dedicated to his craft.

Friend of mine, he got a job in KSA. Became Muslim, got a lower wage. Why? You’re Muslim now, you actually want to be here, so we don’t need to woo you anymore.

British company that makes the air conditioning units for Masjid al-haraam. They send someone to the airport, but they send him back because he’s a brown guy. They want a white guy to fix their A/C.

You always wanna try to get the best, regardless of Muslim or non-Muslim, and treat them equally!

We should try to do it in the best way that we can. The messenger of Allah, when he arrived in medina, it was a very festive mood. These narrations have come to us from authentic scholars. Tala al Badru alayna was sung (maybe we can get a performance from one of the brothers)

Everybody wants to host the messenger of Allah. So Rasulullah sets the camel free. Leave it alone, it’s being commanded. The camel sat down in an open area where they used to dry dates. Abu Ayub al-Ansari from Banu Najjar, from Khazraj, and also from the descendants of the wife of Hashim. So the prophet (saw) was hosted by the house of Abu Ayub al-Ansari. The front of his house belonged to two orphans. And they wanted to give this land so Rasul could make a masjid. He was told this used to be a grave. He bought the land, even though the orphans were willing to give it for free. He paid the guardian, and the reason he dealt with the guardian was because the property was not quite inherited by the orphans yet, they didn’t have full claim. The reason he did that was because the offer of the orphans was not yet valid because they aren’t of age yet, just like when you exchanged a bag of ice cream for a mercedes with a kid, even though the kid wanted the ice cream the transaction is invalid because the child doesn’t understand the worth of the mercedes.

Rasulullah took that plot of land, and it was cleared off, because you cannot have a masjid on a grave. The grave of the prophet used to be a house, the room of aisha. The left side of the masjid on the graveside is always open. So it’s not considered part of the masjid. There is a partition there so people would not worship there. It’s okay as long as there is a partition and it’s not in the middle of the masjid.

You cannot have a masjid in a grave, so he took all the bones out and put them in a different place (shows when exhumation is permissible?)

His wives were Suada and Aisha, and once she had attained the level of puberty, she would live with Rasulullah (saw)

When the prophet was staying with Ayub al-Ansari, he requested the first floor in the beginning because of a lot of visitors. Ayub al-Ansari requested the 2nd floor for the prophet out of respect.

One of the Imam’s would feel shame at stretching his leg in the direction of his Imams house, even though his imam lived 2 blocks or two houses away. Examples of manners, stretching your leg facing your parents in desi culture, not cool. france, people burp to show appreciation of the food. some people have no qualms about picking their nose in front of you. when shaykh was visiting, he was sitting crosslegged, and people tried to tell him that it was not quite acceptable, but they tried to take the burden of the disrespect by not embarassing him.

Out of respect for other cultures, just observe what they see as acceptable. You don’t need specific proof.

Ayub al-Ansari felt uncomfortable sleeping on the second floor above the prophet, and even though the prophet felt more comfortable on the first floor, he still respected the feelings of Ayub al-Ansari.

If you have a guest like the prophet (saw) are you going to serve anything less than your favorite food? So when the prophet said he didn’t like garlic or onions, Ayub al-Ansari also started not to like raw garlic and onions after the example of the prophet.

Understand the room was not that big. One room was just enough for the person to sleep. The whole room was the size of a queen size bed. If you were to stand up, your hand would touch the ceiling if you reached up. If you were lying down, and you stretched out, you would touch the other wall.

Aisha, when she would sleep, Rasulullah would tap her foot when he was about to make sujood so she would curl up, and then stretch out again when he would go back up. The roof of the masjid was made of palm leaf fibers, so when it rained, they would be ordered to pray at home. In Islam, everything is considered clean unless proven otherwise, unless you see something or smell something.

“Pray in your shoes, be different from the Jews.” Hey, that rhymes.

Some people they read this hadith, that it’s sunnah to pray in your shoes. BUt that’s when you’re outside, and if your masjid is like the masjid of Rasulullah. But, if there is carpet, and it’s not made to be prayed on with shoes. Don’t cause more fitnah. But to believe that you can’t pray with your shoes on is bid’ah. Because the prophet used to pray with his shoes on. If one of you comes to the masjid, and sees something on his shoe, scrub it on the ground, and it’ll be clean iA.

In the masjid, it is recommended that it remains simple. Make it as simple as possible. The more money you waste in the masjid, the less blessing you receive. That is why some scholars are of the opinion that it is not permitted to build a dome if there is no reason for it. If it is just for decoration. If it’s for acoustics, sure, whatever reason is there. But for purely ornamental reasons. The green dome on the masjid, the scholars cried, because they knew it was haraam. And you’re not supposed to build anything on top of  a grave, and Rasulullah ordered it. Why did the Saudi government not just take it down? It might’ve caused greater problems to take it down, so they left it. But just because it’s there, doesn’t mean it’s right.

When you build a masjid, why did Rasulullah not allow the masjid to be beautified? This is a sign of Yaum al-Qiyamah, that people would compete in building beautiful masjids, but no one speaks about what will go on.

When building a masjid, more time and more money should be spent on building the activities and services, not on the structure.

When starting a community, the first thing you do is build the masjid. Second, establishing brotherhood. Thrid, establishing the constituttion of Medina.

Any company or any organization is only as strong as the people in the masajid. What can we do to strengthen our community? By establishing organizations to help people help each other. Make usre that you organize the community in  a way that the strong are helping the weak, rich are helping the poor, haves are helping the have nots.

What can we do to strengthen our community? Strengthen the bonds of brotherhood.

The Ansaar were very generous, they wanted to help the muhajireen.

Food stamp system? No. Why don’t you guys work on the land and let them help you? The ansaar worked on the land, and the muhajiroon, they helped. That way they wouldn’t simply be leaching from the Ansaar.

Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf he was paired with Saad ibn Rubiyah <– wealthiest man in medina. I’m gonna give you half of my wealth. The ansaar didn’t take advantage of this. May Allah bless you in your wealth and your family, I don’t want anything. Just show me where the sooq is. He asked people around, do you need anything done? Lesson here: If you ain’t got no money…look for a job.

One of the companions, he got married with one nugget of gold, but it was made from his work. Rasulullah ordered him to have a walimah, because the difference in fornication and marriage is celebration. In marriage there is a celebration so people know that they are married. You announce the marriage. if you don’t have witnesses, and you just have a feast, that will take the place of the witnesses.

Everyone is happy that there is a new Muslim in the masjid, but no one wants to take it on them to help them financially. Someone has to be assigned to this person to be a personal helper, like the ansaar. This system has to be set up in the masjid, there must be a brother or a sister assigned to this person. They have a hard time, because they don’t feel accepted in the masjid. If you ask any new Muslim, they will tell you of the hardships they have faced.

When you visit someone, visit them just for the sake of Allah, no other reason. Take the time to establish the brotherhood, the prophet would establish this even after the establishment of Islam. There was a group in Habasha led by Jafaar Ibn Abi Talib. They didn’t come until the 8th year. This was when Rasulullah defeated the enemies of Islam. Why did people stay in Habsha? Because it was a backup plan. In Mecca, Rasulullah established the same thing. He paired Zayd ibn Haritha with Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib.

Rasulullah paired himself with Ali (Ra) to play to their strengths. This was started in Mecca, the practice of pairing people with other people.

Abu Dardar was paired with Salman al-Farsi. Umm Dardar never took care of herself in front of Abu Dardar. He asked her why she didn’t adorn herself for her husband. She said he didn’t need her, he was always fasting and praying. Salman al-Farsi knew this wasn’t right. Rasulullah told Abu Dardar, “Your lord has a right upon your, your wife has a right upon you, and your body has a right over you.”

Meaning, don’t do these things at the expense of neglecting yourself and your family.

You have to have somebody who is willing to advise you, and the believer has to be the mirror of the other. Like, when you look in the mirror, the flaw you can’t see is now visible. Sometimes we have faults that are standing out, and everybody can see them, and we’re like, there is nothing wrong. Our brothers can see it, our sisters can see it, but we have to be told that.

Story: I don’t want to hang around people who don’t tell me when I’m doing wrong. If you love me for the sake of Allah, then you will tell me what to do that will help improve me. (Friend of shaykh)

Helps you to understand how a Muslim should be toward one another. It’s hard for us to swallow the truth, because it’s bitter. Maybe you shouldn’t be doing that.

Love for your brother what you love for yoursself <–this is the minimum. The highest is when you want more for your brother or sister than you want for yourself, even if you are in dire straights. In dunya, you should prefer your brother or sister over yourself.  In akhira, you can compete. Loving MORE for your bro or sister is the praisworthy positon.

“None of you truly believes…”

So when the prophet established that, another thing had to be established. The oldest, first written constitution in the history of the world. The forefathers of the constitution were inspired by copies of the Medina constitution, and this is why leaders like Thomas Jefferson had copies of the Quran.

The prophet, after establishing the masjid, and also the brotherhood, had to lay down the Quran and the Sunnah.

The Muslims are going to follow whatever the prophet says, but the non-Muslims need the rules and guidlines and laws of the land.

The Madinah constitution:

  1. They are one nation to the exclusion of other people
  2. The emigrants of Quraysh unite together and shall pay blood money among themselves, and shall ransom honorably their prisoners. Every tribe of the Helpers unite together, as they were at first, and every section among them will pay a ransom for acquitting its relative prisoners.
  3. Believers shall not leave anyone destitute among them by not paying his redemption money or blood money in kind.
  4. Whoever is rebellious or whoever seeks to spread enmity and sedition, the hand of every God-fearing Muslim shall be against him, even if he be his son.
  5. A believer shall not kill another believer, nor shall support a disbeliever against a believer.

If a believer helps a non-Muslim against a Muslim, this takes him outside the state of Islam.

6. The potection of Allah is one and is equally extended to the humblest of believers

7. The Belivers are supported by each other.

8. Whosoever of the Jews follows us shall have aid and succor, they shall not be injured, nor any enemy be aided against them

9. The peace of the believers is indivisible. No seperate peace shall be made when believers are fighting in the way of Allah. Conditions must be fair and equitable to all.

10. IT shall not be lawful for a believer, who holds by what is in this document and believes in Allah and the Day of Judgement, to help a criminal nor give him refuge. Those who give him refuge and render him help shall not have

The Medinah Treaty:

The Jews of Bani Awf are one community with the believers. The Jews will profess their religion and the Muslims theirs.

Jews shall be responsble for their expenditure, and the Muslims for theirs.

If attacked by a third party, each shall come to the assistance of the other

Each party shall hold counsel with the other. Mutual relation shall be founded on righteousness, sin is totally excluded.

Jews shall contrinute to cost of war…

If you do something wrong, there are consequences. The Jews of Medina, they agree to this treaty with the Prophet of Allah.

So there were the Jews, then the non-Muslims, and the Muslims. In the beginning you had non-Muslims, who were not Jews nor were they hypocrites. The hypocrites didn’t show up until later on, after the battle of Badr.

The treaty established law in the land, and established a working relationship between the Jews and the Muslims. The prophet never forced them to accept Islam. As long as they abided by the treaty, they were allowed to live peacefully with the Muslims.

So now, the Muslims had a place. Where they wre able to establish a nation. And they were able to worship Allah peacefully. If you lived in Makkah, and you were Muslim, it was incumbent upon you to move to a Muslim land. If you were able to leave, then you should leave.

The Meccans were not happy with that, so they sent a letter.  Abdullah ibn Obay ibn saloom? chosen as pretty much the king after the Aws came out on top in the great battle before the coming of Rasul.

Abdullah ibn Obay ibn Salom? thought that the prophet trumped his appointment. So he felt that the messenger stole his election. That is why he was jealous of the Prophet. That is why he was always trying to cause problems and enmity.

So he said, If you do not expell Muhammad and his followers from edina, we will crush you. When Abdullah ibn Obay received this letter, they were trying to plan what the next step should be. Should the xpell him, should there be an uprising. When Rasulullah happened upon this meeting, they dispersed. Allah )swt) now had given the Muslims permission to fight. When Rasulullah was given permission to make the hijra, Allah (swt) revealed the ayah in Surahtul Hajj ayah number 39 Allah (swt) says: To those against whom war is made, permission is given to them to fight, for they (the war declarers)  are wrong.

Who are the ones harming the Muslims? The Makkans. Now permission has been given to fight them. Much of their wealth had been taken by the aristocrats of Mekkah. Permission has now been given to fight back.

Rasulullah had started sending caravans, and expeditions out. The prophet tried to impede the movement of the Qurashi caravans. The Muslims now have a nation. The Quraysh has sent a letter, delcaring they are ready to attack the Muslims. This is a declaration of war.

Any country that you are at war with, you are allowed to weaken the economically. So Rasulullah started sending expeditons out, to try to see the movements of the caravan and weaken the economically. So the Muslims, he himself, he went, when he heard there was a caravan, he would go and try to see if they can impede their movements. But he also wanted to stop the caravan routes going to the south, to Yemen. Rsul sent Abdullah ibn Jahsh. He told them, “Go out, go out for two days, and then open up this letter. In this letter, you will betold where to go.” This is such an improtant expedition, that only two people actually knew about it in Medinah. The companions would write for the Rasul, and later a ring was made for him, because the kings would not accept letters unless it was stamped.

So he didn’t tell the people where they were going. Just travel for two days, then open up the letter, and you’ll find where to go.

In the letter, “Go to Nakhlah.” this is in the outskirts of Mekka. “just go there and seek the caravan routes” it was for information gathering purposes. When Rasul sent them, he didn’t order them to fight. Rasul himself would try to seek it out, but he would miss them. The reason rasul was late last time, was because it was too many people that went last time. Abu Sufyans caravan had been missed by two days, carrying the wealth of the Muslims. The caravan had escaped.

Now, Rasul sent this group to check out the southern routes. Abdullah ibn Jahsh, told the poeple, we have been told to go to Nakhlah, so whoever wants to go back can go back. Because they had basically been ordred to go behind enemy lines. None refused, they all went.

When they arrived in Nakhlah, They arrived on the last day of Rajab. fighting is not permitted in Rajab. Why did they have these months? Because they needed a break sometime. You could still survive, because fighting is not permitted and you could do your business.

So when the companions, Abdullah ibn Jahsh arrived at the area of Nakhlah, it was there that they saw a caravan. Abdullah ibn Jahsh knew that Rasulullah wanted to overtake a caravan but was unable to do so. So he thought they could easily overtake this caravan. It was decided they should attack this caravan. The first person to throw the first arrow was Waqi ? killed Amr ibn Hadrami. After this symbol, he became the 9/11 of Mecca. He was like the pearl harbor of the Makkans. This is what they used to incite all of the Arabian peninsula. Because the Muslims had killed someone in the month of haraam, they started to spread the message that the Muslims are terrorists. They said, “These people do not respect our way of life.” Because this is the forbidden month. Why did the Muslims attack? This was the only open window, after today it will close, so he made a calculated decision. He captured the caravan, and two people. One, Naufal, escped. He told the people of mecca what happened. They started going around, spreading propaganda.

The prophet was very angry at what the Muslims had done, and did not accept the prisoners. He did not accept, because he knew this was a mistake of the Muslims.

Lessons: there are some Muslims, according to their own judgement, they make decisions that are not islamic. What happens now is that Islam stands on trial. When a muslim does something nowadays, it doesn’t matter if he goes to bars or what, he does something, and suddenly it’s like his religion is on trial as well. What can we do, what’s the stand that we take?

We’re put in this situation a lot. This is similar to what happened in the time of the Prophet. The prophet was angry, didnt accept the spoils of the caravan and the companions of this expedition were very sad because they knew they had done wrong. The damage had been done.

Surah Baqara: 217 – What we say,

Al-Baqara (The Cow)

يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ قِتَالٍ فِيهِ قُلْ قِتَالٌ فِيهِ كَبِيرٌ وَصَدٌّ عَن سَبِيلِ اللّهِ وَكُفْرٌ بِهِ وَالْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَإِخْرَاجُ أَهْلِهِ مِنْهُ أَكْبَرُ عِندَ اللّهِ وَالْفِتْنَةُ أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْقَتْلِ وَلاَ يَزَالُونَ يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ حَتَّىَ يَرُدُّوكُمْ عَن دِينِكُمْ إِنِ اسْتَطَاعُواْ وَمَن يَرْتَدِدْ مِنكُمْ عَن دِينِهِ فَيَمُتْ وَهُوَ كَافِرٌ فَأُوْلَـئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَأُوْلَـئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ (2:217)

  • Yes, what we have done is wrong, but tell them to look at the bigger picture. Does this justify killing hundreds of thousands of other people, who are innocent? What have they done? The majority of them have done nothing. What you have done in terms of disrespecting human life is far greater. In terms of respecting international law or tradtions, who is worse?

    Sometimes, they will mention certain things about treatment of prisoners, but who is worse? Now it seems like, someone disrespecting a dog gets more attention than someone disrespecting a human, a Muslim. We would have an uproar if we did the same thing to the dogs that was done to the prisoners in Abu Ghurayb and Guantanamo.

    So look at the bigger picture. See how you’re dealing with things, how you’re looking at things.

    The same thing that they’re saying against the Muslims, they are perpetrating worse. When this ayah was revealed, the Muslims were relieved. it cleared the air for the Muslims.

    When something like this happens. We should have a representative with knowledge to speak up for the Muslims. Make them see the bigger picture, make them see the truth.

    With the fort hood incident, the exact same thing happened 2 weeks ago, on an army base in Iraq. The only difference, the guy wasn’t Muslim. Did anyone hear about it? no.

    So back to Medina. The second time the caravan of Abu Sufyan comes by, Rasul knows to act fast. There are 170 from the Khazraj, and 61 from the Aws, and the rest are the muhajireen. Why were there more Khazraj? Because the announcement to go after the caravan was made in the Khazraji neighborhood where the masjid was, so they had more notice.

    Rasulullah was in such a hurry, that he left Medina without a leader. On his way, he realized, I just left Medina without a leader. He sent Abu Lubaba to tell ? to lead the prayer.

    The lesson: If you’re leaving, appoint someone to lead the prayer and make decisions. Have someone, your deputy to take charge. So that’s what Rasul did. When it was time for the prophet to walk, Ali and ? said, “We will walk on your behalf.” He is their leader, their general. Rasul is going down to walk, and he said, “Both of you, you’re not stronger than me, and I am in no less of reward than the both of you.” So when it was time for him to walk, he walked. It shows the humbleness of Rasul. Tell me a general of this world, who would actually walk among his soldiers today.

    So they are headed that way. They are headed toward the caravan. The whole time, Abu Sufyan is also sending his scouts. News reaches him that the prophet (Saw) has come iwth hhis army of over 300 men. He sends Dhumdhum? to Mekkah, on the fastest camel , to warn the Quraysh. When he reaches Mecca, DhumDhum is telling the people that Abu Sufyan has sent a warning. So he’s trying to tell the people, but most don’t even listen to him. So to get peoples attention, he chops off a camels nose, and the camel is making a horrific nose, and he rips his shirt like a madman. so now he’s got everyone’s attention. he’s yelling to the people, “Help hep! your caravan with Abu Sufyan is in danger. Muhamad and his men are going after the caravan! I don’t think you can even make it in time, but you better hurry.”

    So at the time, Abu Jahal is making fun of the family of Banu Hashim. Attika bint abdul-muttalib, the aunt of Rasul, had seen a dream. She saw a man, standing on the same area where DhumDhum had stood, with a boulder. He rolled the boulder, it cracked, and each piece went into a house. A caller: “Oh people of Badr! Come to your death in three days.” It was very scary, because every house in Mecca would have a calamity.

    Attika was telling the women, and of course, they’re going to talk. It reaches Abu Jahal. So he’s making fun of Banu Hashim. Why is she saying such things? To al-Abbas, his brother, the other uncle of Rasul, “Isn’t it enough that you have a prophet, now you have a prophetess?” And all the while DhumDhum is yelling.

    So, they gather an army of 1000 people, and start heading north to where the caravan is, led by Abu Jahal. The non muslims have much more power in terms of numbers. Had not only people, the non Muslims had thousands of Camels, horses, armor, so this is a very strong army. The mekkans were very strong. They were the superpower of the Arabian peninsula. This was the financial capital. They had the strongest army at the time. So, they started going up toward the caravan. Then Abu Sufyan, of course, he is sending his scouts and spies out to see the positon of the Muslims. He even goes out himself. He finds camel dung. He knows that this camel came from Medina. So he is sure that the prophet knows his position. (dung had date seeds, lotsa date trees in medina)

    When you look at the map between Mekka and Medina, there is a mountain range.

    Abu Sufyan decides to take the coastal route to avoid the Muslims. No matter where the army is, they would be safe. Rasulullah was expecting to meet the caravan in the middle.

    Abu Sufyan tells Abu Jahal to turn the caravan around via messenger, but he refuses. but part of the army left. when people started going back to mecca, the remaining army was only 1000. Abu Jahal swears by Allah, that they will not go back to Mecca. We will make this a lesson for other Arab tribes. That nobody messes with the Quraysh. Even if the caravans are safe, we will go to Badr.

    This was where they used to have their annual fairs, because this is where there were a lot of wells. We will have the women sing, and we will eat and drink, and then we will let the arabs hear about it.

    The people said to Rasullulah, “We will not be like Bani Israeel, we will be with you fighting by your side. Even if you tell us to go to the coast and go into the water, we will be with you.”

    Rasulullah was not totally satisfied, because he heard this from Mecca. He had not heard from the people of Medina yet. He asked, “Tell me, give me advice.” Rasulullah wanted the Ansar to speak, because of the clause in Aqabah. Rasulullah wants everyone to be on the same page.

    Lesson: Consult, don’t assume that everyonne is on the same page.
